Born in England, Dr. Makam moved to the US when she was six years old and swiftly moved throughout the Midwest until finally moving to Cary, NC for high school. She then completed her undergraduate education at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a member of the dental honor society Delta Delta Sigma. From there, Dr. Makam worked as a research assistant at the Johns Lab at UNC studying the effects of maternal drug addiction on fetal neurodevelopment. During her time working in research she also spent countless hours shadowing and volunteering in the dental field. These experiences solidified her passion to help those in need by combining her interests of medicine and art.
After two years of research, she moved to Miami, Florida and completed her Masters in Biomedical Science at Barry University. Dr. Makam returned to North Carolina to complete her dental degree at East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. She then went on to complete an AEGD residency at the Dayton VA Medical Center where she received advanced training in dental surgery, oral pathology, complex prosthetic cases, implants, CEREC and management of severely immunocompromised patients. The opportunity to serve those who have sacrificed so much for our country has been an incredibly rewarding experience for Dr. Makam.
